Chapter One Introduction 

The  aim  of  this  chapter  is  expected  to  introduce  something  about  the  study  of repair  from  five  dimensions.  It  starts  with  research  background,  which  proves  the frequency  and  necessity  of  repair  as  a  kind  of  linguistic  phenomenon  happening  in daily  life  whenever  we  are  engaged  in  a  certain  conversation.  Then  what  follows  is the  purpose  and  significance  of  the  thesis,  which  is  unfolded  clearly  from  three perspectives. Then it comes to research questions of the thesis. After that, something about  the  research  methodology  is  to  be  given.  At  the  end  of  the  chapter,  particular information about the arrangement and organization of the thesis will be described. 

1.1 Research Background
Verbal  communication,  like  human  beings’  other  social  behavior,  is  never perfect  and  flawless.  Because  people  are  inclined  to  face  up  with  all  kinds  of problems  or  obstacles  whenever  they  are  ready  to  talk,  to  argue,  to  share  and  to exchange ideas. A case to the point is as follows: From the dialogue above, we can see that the speaker “术洋” makes a false start when he calls his aunt. And he recognizes the problem immediately, so he repairs “表婶子” with “小婶子” at once. In order to avoid embarrassment and correctly express his affection, “术洋” resorts to repair when it comes to the slip of the tongue. It is a common phenomenon of repair we may confront in our daily life. In this example, A as the speaker starts the conversation about a car. However, he  mistakes  its  name  as  another  type  of  car.  In  order  to  continue  the  topic  of communication, B points out his misunderstanding by repairing “朗逸” with “迈腾”, which  makes  sure  of  the  same  thing  they  are  talking  about.  As  a  result,  the  ensuing discussion goes on smoothly. From  the  information  above,  a  safe  conclusion  can  be  reached  that  repair,  as  a linguistic device, is of much importance to smoothen the continuity of exchange and communication in daily life. Therefore, it is worthwhile to conduct further researches to explore its mechanism and functions.

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance 
The significance and purpose of the present study of repair can be unfolded from at least three aspects. To  start  with,  although  the  studies  of  repair  have  been  conducted  from  many perspectives  and  fields,  yet  little  attention  has  been  given  to  discuss  the  mechanism and  functions  of  repair  from  the  perspective  of  informative  transmission  and interpersonal  relation.
