This paper, by constructing a tentative Rapport Management-Adaptation theoretical model, is trying to analyze the dynamic use of repair in interpersonal communication. In addition, in pragmatics, relation has ever been discussed in politeness theory. However, because of the development of interpersonal pragmatics, relation has been emphasized and highlighted. Spencer-Oatey (2013) claims that the discussion of relation should be made individually. The focus of the present study of repair is fixed on interpersonal relation. Thus, if any research fruit can be obtained, it will pragmatically do some help to the study of repair and relation in general. Finally, in daily life, communicative problems or obstacles are confronted here and there. Communicators are ready to adopt felicitous strategies to remove out these difficulties. Repair, as a linguistic device, is of much effect to help communicative participants continue the talk, exchange and interaction, etc. As a result, it is very necessary to carry out such a study to further analyze the mechanism and functions of repair.

This chapter is to review the studies of repair. It firstly discusses the definition, distinction with correction and the classification of repair. And then it reviews the multi-disciplined approaches to repair in previous studies. Then in the third part, it points out the weakness of the preceding studies of repair. Finally, it elicits the reasonableness and necessity of the present study of repair.
