Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Language is often used as a tool for communication. Many language strategies may be used when people talk with each other. Deliberate Misinterpretation, or DMI for short, often appears in verbal communication as a language strategy. DMI, as a special language phenomenon, is often used to achieve special communicative goals. That is to say, when people use this language strategy, they want to achieve their special communicative effects. DMI, as a special pragmatic strategy, exists mainly because of the three properties of language: variability, negotiability and adaptability. In verbal communication, the second speaker sometimes misinterprets the first speaker’s intended meaning, which is the result of linguistic adaptation. DMI has aroused the interest of researchers both in China and abroad. However, it was regarded as a special kind of misunderstanding by researchers abroad at first, and there were few studies about DMI in China before 2004. Until 2004, Chinese linguists He Ziran and Shen Zhiqi publicized their article Pragmatic Analysis of Deliberate Misinterpretation, which first clarified the definition of DMI. After their study, many studies have been conducted to research DMI from different perspectives. However, most studies from the perspective of pragmatics only analyzed DMI by adoptin g the Relevance Theory, the Face Theory and the Politeness Principle. Few studies have explored DMI from the perspective of Linguistic Adaptation Theory. DMI is the result of the language using and choosing process and the Linguistic Adaptation Theory can be applied to analyze DMI.
